5 Pin XLR is the film and television standard pin configuration for DMX (Digital MultipleXing)
DMX is the standard by which lighting desks, consoles and controllers communicate to lighting fixtures and dimmers.
DMX signals can be looped through lighting fixtures.
The cables can also be used for “Master & Slave” modes for lights such as the Arri Skypanel (see video below)
